The term Norden has not so far taken root in English. This has been helped by the fact that these communities, notwithstanding their internal differences, show a common geographical, historical and socio-cultural distinctness from the rest of Europe. It is precisely this distinctness that lies behind the idea of a comprehensive and comparative history of Scandinavia which is carried into effect in the present volume and the two following volumes of The Cambridge History of Scandinavia.

In the following historical representation the terms Scandinavia and Scandinavian will be used in this wide sense. The present volume deals with the development of Scandinavian communities up to and including the Middle Ages, here ending in about , which is considered the start of the early Modern Period treated in the next volume. It should at the outset be noted that due to the scarcity of written evidence the prehistory of Scandinavia stretches well into the early Middle Ages of European history.

Up to about ad it is therefore customary to divide Scandinavian history into archaeological periods. Such periods, like the subdivisions of the following historic Middle Ages, tend to vary from country to country, both in their nomenclature and their chronological delimitations. The matter is further complicated by a tendency in recent archaeological research to modify time-honoured chronological limits in order to bring them into accordance with new finds and revised dates of older ones.

In the following account of Scandinavian prehistory and medieval history a common standard of periodisation will be attempted. The system chosen will not completely correspond to the national conventions of any single Scandinavian country, but up to and including the Iron Age it will generally follow the Danish system, from which the Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish systems do not radically deviate.

February 11, In addition to general references on botany, this last section includes some areas of botany less often considered by forensic practitioners. This compiler has used dendrochronology, the counting and analysis of growth rings, toward helping to determine the age of a clandestine burial. From a segment of that root collected from the scene, a University of Missouri botanist was able to determine that at least four years were required for it to have grown through the burial.

Phytoliths, or the silica remains of certain plants are often used by archaeologists to explain age and context.

It is taken by many students who wish to include archaeology in a broader Arts and Science degree, in addition to those specializing in Single Honours Archaeology. Other students follow the course as a subsidiary part of degrees such as History, Geography, Psychology or Music. The book has been influenced by what I felt this mix of students might usefully learn about archaeology. I appreciate their many com- ments positive and negative over the years.

Several individual archaeologists have influenced this book. My debt to the writings of Glyn Daniel and Stuart Piggott on the history of archaeology will be apparent throughout this book. I also gained much from work- ing in adult education with Colin Burgess during my early years in Newcastle. Sadly, the most influential of the colleagues I joined in the Department of Archaeology in —George Jobey, Martin Harrison and John Gillam—have all died in recent years.

Fortunately, my current colleagues Chris Tolan-Smith and John Chapman continually enhance my awareness of developments in archaeological method and theory. Finally, I thank my wife Julia and my children Danny, Liam and Eva for help, support and forbearance at all stages of the Great Rewriting that took place in and early

Google We face the technical skill and knowledge of the Viking in their ships – the ship is the finest they have achieved in the material culture. They developed the best ships of their time, ships which were a precondition for their journeys around the world. The ship was his instrument of power, his joy, his dearest possession – whether the ship slipped quietly from land on its splendid keel or it was figthing the waves with its ornamented stem – the ship was his favourite child, created by his skilled hand and spoken of in affectionate words in songs and poetry of the scald.

In spite of the indissoluble connection of the Viking and his ship only few ship wrecks have been found, compared to the number of ships the Vikings had according to contemporary sources. They were discovered and excavated separately between and , and they all date from the ninth century AD. All were used as burials of important people from the Viking Age.

Each of the three ships — the Tune, the Gokstad and the Oseberg – was hermetically sealed and, thus, preserved by the blue clay, stones and turf which covered them. Mounds were then built over the ship burial. The Tune, the Gokstad and the Oseberg ship have all the attributes of the longship: The Viking ships were famous for their construction.
